Whizkin Games' Founder, Jonathan Towers

Our Founder

Jonny Towers, founder of Whizkin Games, has loved the creative arts since childhood. He often turned his own stories into playful little games for his family, always curious to explore the many forms of artistic expression before finding his path.

He went on to study Furniture and Product Design at Northumbria University, and after graduating, returned to his hometown of Hartlepool to continue developing his visual arts skills as a hobby.

While pursuing a career in the arts locally proved challenging, Jonny remained dedicated to personal projects, honing his craft in modernist painting, music composition, digital artwork, and storytelling for games.

Jonny has always been an avid gamer, especially fond of revisiting the 2D classics he played as a child. Inspired by these memories, he dreamed of creating a game he would love to play himself, though at the time, he wasn’t sure where to start.

During lockdown, Jonny began searching for a game engine to bring his idea to life. That’s when he discovered Godot, an open-source engine ideal for 2D games. After countless hours following online tutorials, the moment finally came when he truly understood how to program games.

For Jonny, game development became the perfect way to combine all his creative passions. He could write his own stories, design the artwork, compose the music, and program the mechanics. Game creation offered him a single avenue to explore his many interests, developing games that both he and players alike will love to experience.

After lockdown, Jonny remained determined to push his project forward, learning new skills along the way. He developed his skills using Blender to create and animate 3D models, honed his music production in Ableton Live, and became highly proficient in GDScript, Godot Engine’s built-in scripting language.

Five years later, Jonny realized he had the skill and drive to complete his project, and to build a studio to bring his games to life. Using his online pseudonym, Whizkin, he founded Whizkin Games, a 2D game development studio focused on retro-inspired titles. His vision is to help ambitious creators in the North East of the UK build rewarding careers in the gaming industry.
